Workplace Injuries in NC
A recent federal study estimated that the rate of workplace injuries in North and South Carolina were lower than a majority of other states. According to the report, North Carolina had a rate of 3.1 injuries per 100 employees in private companies during 2009. In 2008, the rate was 3.4 cases per 100 full time employees. However, according to Peter Dooley, a Michigan safety consultant who is also a member of OSHA’s advisory panel said that companies try to avoid reporting all injuries.
“It’s technically illegal, but it does happen in ways that companies basically get away with it,” Dooley said. “Workers are increasingly worried about having the jobs they have and that can really effect the bottom-line numbers.”
The US Dept of Labor recently audited North and South Carolina and were unhappy that safety problems in the workplace had been downplayed. The average penalty in NC was $512 while OSHA’s average penalty for violations is $970. Read More.
