Seven Motorcycles Involved in Wreck During NC Lupus Awareness Ride
At around 11:45 a.m. Saturday, a Wendell wreck involving seven motorcycles left two people seriously injured and one victim in critical condition. According to reports, the wreck occurred after a ball fell out of the back of a truck and onto the highway, causing a chain reaction of crashes to occur.
When the wreck occurred, a group of approximately 20 female bikers were riding along the highway as part of the 4th Annual North Carolina Female Ride. According to the group’s Facebook page, each year female bikers from across the state join together as part of the event to raise awareness around Lupus.
The wrecks took place on U.S. Highway 64 East, near Lizard Lick Road. That section of the highway was shut down for three hours before re-opening around 2:45 pm. No other information about the wreck was immediately available at the time of report.
If you live in North Carolina and you drive a motorcycle, we urge you to practice extreme caution while riding, especially along busy highways. Motorcyclists are less protected on the road than motorists in cars and trucks, and accidents can be catastrophic, resulting in severe head and brain injuries, and possibly even death. In fact, according to the most recent statistics, approximately one in eight North Carolina traffic fatalities involves a motorcycle.
Motorcycle Safety Tips
Before heading out on the roads, make sure you review these motorcycle safety tips from AAA – a great resource for motorcyclists, and other motorists alike, to keep the roads safer for everyone.
Safety Tips for Motorcyclists
- Always wear a helmet that offers a “high-protection” standard
- Wear proper clothing to ensure a safe ride, including correct eyewear and close-toed footwear
- Always keep headlights, taillights and marker lights on at dusk, in dark or in bad weather
Safety Tips for Motorists
- Make an effort to be extremely cautious on weekends and in nice weather, when motorcyclists are more likely to be riding
- Never, ever share a lane with a motorcycle
- When riding near a motorcyclist, allow extra maneuvering room for you both in case of the unexpected (potholes, road debris, accidents ahead, etc.)
Unfortunately, no matter how many precautions a motorcyclist may take, it’s impossible to predict the actions of other drivers around you, which could unnecessarily create danger for both parties. The injuries that exist with an accident involving a motorcyclist are often more devastating than the typical car accident, resulting in higher medical bills and increased recovery time. In these instances, motorcycle accident victims may be entitled to much needed compensation for recovery.
