National Bike Month Safety
May is National Bike Month. Celebrate by pulling out your bike and riding to work, the grocery store, or
just to enjoy the warm weather. It is important to remember that road rules apply to bicyclists as well.
As bicycle accident attorneys, we want to remind everyone that it is important know the rules and to
put safety first.
Follow Traffic Signs and Signals.
Bicyclists have the same rights and duties as drivers. It is important to follow traffic lights and stop at stop signs.
Cyclists should ride in the rightmost lane of the road. It is also important to ride in the same direction that traffic is moving. Avoid riding too close to parked cars because doors could open suddenly.
Make sure that you signal before turning or changing lanes. It is important to let drivers know your intentions.
Wear Proper Attire.
Riders need to wear helmets at all times. The helmets should fit properly and straps should be fastened. To ensure drivers see bike riders, bright colors or reflectors should be worn.
Make sure you bike is riding properly. Check the amount of air in the tires and the brakes before riding down the road.
