Head-On Collision Kills One, Shuts Down Entire Section of I-40 West in Raleigh
Reports say that at around 4:45 p.m. yesterday afternoon, a man traveling eastbound on I-40 crossed over the highway median and into the westbound lanes, where he collided head-on with another car. The driver of the other car, Catherine Obie, an 83-year-old woman from Durham, was killed.
The wreck occurred near Raleigh at mile marker 295, and shut down all westbound lanes of I-40 between Lake Wheeler Road and Gorman Street for nearly five hours.
According to Raleigh police reports, Brandon Lewis Jefferson, 22, fell asleep at at the wheel before crossing over the highway median and colliding with Ms. Obie’s vehicle. His vehicle overturned in the middle of the highway, while Ms. Obie’s vehicle was pushed off the highway and into a tree, reports say.
Jefferson has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, and was released on bond early Monday.
The closed section of I-40W did not re-open until around 11 p.m. Sunday evening. And reports say that at least 5 other vehicles were involved in the wreck, though it’s not known whether there were any other injuries or fatalities.
The Impact of Drowsy Driving
Unfortunately, accidents caused by drivers who are sleepy or fatigued are not uncommon. According to a national survey, more than 40% of drivers have admitted to “falling asleep or nodding off” while on the road at some point during their lives, with 11% having done it in the last year.
It goes without saying, but it is never a good idea to drive while feeling fatigued. Losing consciousness behind the wheel for just a few moments could be catastrophic, especially on crowded highways. A death resulting from a motor vehicle accident caused by a sleepy or impaired driver may be grounds for a wrongful death lawsuit.
