Harnett County Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash
Sunday night over the Memorial Day weekend, 38-year-old David Schultz of Sanford, NC died in a hit-and-run crash after being dragged several feet by a vehicle on Ponderosa Road, just north of Highway 27 in Harnett County. Schultz was walking, intoxicated, in the middle of the road when he was hit at approximately 11:45 p.m.
Shirley Becker, Schultz’s girlfriend says they were holding a gathering at their house when Schultz got belligerent after having too much to drink. Becker then called the police and asked them to take Schultz into custody for his safety, but police refused explaining he hadn’t broken any law. After a second visit from police, Schultz left the gathering. He was found dead later that evening.
Highway troopers believe Schultz was struck by a larger vehicle, possible an SUV or pickup truck. An 18-year-old man was questioned in the accident, but no arrests have been made yet.
