Hardison Wood Supports Sexual Assault Awareness
Sexual assault is a serious and all too prevalent crime. Though the media has covered certain “high-profile” sexual assault cases recently, mainly those involving local greek fraternity chapters, all cases matter and all victims deserve to be heard. It is up to us to hear them and help them. That’s what the month of April is about.
What is Sexual Assault Awareness Month?
As many of you know, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The core goal of the month is to raise awareness of sexual assault and to educate people around the topic of prevention.
Sexual assault is not only detrimental to dignity and self-esteem, but it can also put a life in severe danger. In order to protect both human rights and overall public health, April is designated for intensifying the initiative and garnering widespread attention for the issue.
What’s being done to prevent sexual assault in 2015?
The 2015 SAAM campaign, initiated by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, has been devoted specifically to combatting the alarming increase in sexual assaults on college campuses. SAAM is taking strides to make college campuses safer, more informed places by providing faculty and students a variety of resources for sexual assault recognition and prevention.
SAAM 2015 has also succeeded in boosting media coverage of sexual assault around the country. Most of us have seen the sexual assault coverage of the NFL last year, but now we are seeing more and more cases gain media attention, and the month of April deserves a good portion of the credit.
How you can help prevent sexual assault
Sexual assault is a despicable and cowardly crime. Don’t let it continue. Be active. Be brave. Be human.
