A Department of Transportation worker was killed yesterday while clearing debris and sand from a section of N.C. Highway 12 following Hurricane Sandy. The storm had inundated the area with sand, forcing crews to clear the area before drivers were cleared to return.
DOT employee Ronnie Anderson’s dump truck broke down in the middle of the highway and was rear-ended by a second dump truck, driven by Michael Brad Stevenson. The crash caused Anderson’s truck to flip over and Stevenson’s truck to catch fire. The crash killed Stevenson and sent Anderson to the hospital.
Both of the trucks were being used to haul sand off the roads when the accident occurred. Stevenson had been a DOT employee for 17 years at the time of his death.
This is the 4th death in the DOT this year, with 3 others perishing from a variety of distracted driving situations.
