Dan Marino Is Latest Former NFL Player To File Concussion Lawsuit
Former NFL Player and Hall of Fame Quarterback Dan Marino joined 14 other former NFL players who have filed a concussion lawsuit against the NFL.
According to USA TODAY, the former NFL players filed the lawsuit on May 28th in a federal court in Pennsylvania, accusing the NFL of “misleading players about the long-term dangers of concussions.” Marino and his 14 former NFL co-filers are just a handful among the 4,500 other players who have accused the NFL of negligence and carelessness.
The accusations against the NFL say the organization exhibited “carelessness, negligence, intentional misconduct” according to documents filed last week and obtained by USA TODAY. Many of the players who are part of the lawsuit have suffered severe medical effects, allegedly a result of a number of concussions suffered while playing for the NFL.
Marino, who played for the Miami Dolphins for 17 seasons, does not have a long history of concussions, but did suffer a neck injury toward the end of his career in the NFL. Other players who have also filed concussion suits include Bob Little, Randy White, Eric Dickerson and a number of others.
The players who have filed suit against the NFL are suffering from conditions such as dementia, depression and Alzheimer’s Disease, which they believe to be a result of extensive concussions.
Last August the NFL and accusing players agreed to a $765 million settlement regarding the case that would award money to former players suffering conditions deemed “eligible” for the compensation. According to NFL.com “Under the settlement, individual awards would be capped at $5 million for men with Alzheimer’s disease, $4 million for those diagnosed after their deaths with a brain condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy; and $3 million for players with dementia.”
However, a U.S. District Judge in Philadelphia rejected the agreement, suggesting that the funds may not be enough to cover lifetime expenses for eligible players.
As more and more former players file lawsuits against the NFL it will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds, and if the NFL will take responsibility for their actions – or lack thereof.
