Catastrophe on the Water
A tragic boating accident occurred over the weekend when a speed boat carrying a wedding party crashed into a construction barge Saturday night near the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but the driver of the boat was charged with vehicular manslaughter.
Boating law requires safe and licensed operation. A reckless or negligent watercraft operator is in breach of boating law and can be held liable for injury. The driver of the boat was suspected of driving the boat while intoxicated. A wrongful death or personal injury case may result from this accident if the driver is found responsibly for the accident.
The barge, overseen by the New York State Thruway Authority, has lights but was difficult to see at night. The authority is looking into safety procedures.
Just as on the road, accidents can happen on the water. It is important to take precaution and have an experienced operator, especially at night because driving is more difficult. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this tough time.
