95-Car Pileup on NC/VA Border
Sunday afternoon on Interstate 77 brought heavy fog and smoke from a nearby fire, creating nightmare driving conditions that led to a massive pileup, blocking traffic in both directions for hours.
Despite advance warning signs in place to warn people, fog banks in the mountainous area can appear almost without warning, enveloping drivers and cutting visibility in some cases to just 30 feet. The poor visibility compounded the initial crash, as car after car slammed into the end of the pileup.
The original crash involved 8 cars, including a tractor-trailer that caught fire and spread to the other vehicles:
In all, 3 people were killed and 25 injured. It took highway authorities working throughout the day until midnight to clear the wreck completely. There were 17 total wrecks, strung along a 1-mile stretch of highway.
